Early intervention is key when it comes to your children's dental health. Isabel Kallman recently wrote on this topic for Alpha Mom, discussing several points parents should keep in mind. Here are two of them:

  • The benefits of orthodontics extend beyond just straight teeth: While the popular assumption may be that a great smile means there's no problem, pediatric orthodontists are concerned with more than just how your child's smile looks. They also closely examine how the movement and growth of the patient's jaw is progressing. There are a range of tools they use to diagnose these issues, including panoramic X-rays to check for impacted, missing or overcrowded teeth.
  • Have your child see an orthodontist by their seventh birthday: Most orthodontic and dental professionals advise that your child has their first orthodontist appointment by their seventh birthday. Waiting longer than this, say until their 10th or 11th birthdays, may worsen existing problems that could have been prevented by earlier intervention. Age seven is the ideal time because, by this point, most children's first molars have come in, and within five years, by age 12, they will have completed most of their dental growth.

KidsBracesNYC also advises early consultation before your child's seventh birthday. Dr. Tanya Vaysman and her staff offer complimentary consultations between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on most week days.
